Who can participate in the challenge?

K-12 students, educators, and community leaders in the U.S. Teams of 1-4 students with an adult leader. The adult registers teams on the official challenge website. Educators (including homeschool parents) can register themselves on the official challenge website.

The challenge is open to:

  • Elementary students (K-5), working with an educator or community leader.

  • Middle school students (6-8), in teams of 1-4 with a supervising adult.

  • High school students (9-12), in teams of 1-4 with a supervising adult.

  • Educators, including homeschool teachers, who can work individually or in small groups.

Participants must be based in the U.S., including territories, and meet eligibility requirements outlined in the guidebook.

The Presidential AI Challenge is open to a wide range of participants, and we want everyone in our community to feel welcome to join! Whether you’re a student, educator, or community leader, there’s a place for you in this exciting initiative. 🌟

Here’s who can participate:


👧 Elementary School Teams (Grades K-5)

  • Teams are led by an educator or community mentor (e.g., a parent, 4-H leader, or another adult).

  • You can register as a classroom or small group.

  • Kids will work together to explore their ideas and create projects with guidance from their team leader.


🧑 Middle School Teams (Grades 6-8)

  • Teams can have 1-4 students, plus a supervising adult (like a teacher, parent, or community mentor).

  • The supervising adult is responsible for helping the team stay on track and submitting the project.


👩‍🎓 High School Teams (Grades 9-12)

  • Like middle school teams, these groups can also have 1-4 students and a supervising adult.

  • High schoolers will take on more complex projects, focusing on practical solutions or app prototypes.


👩‍🏫 Educators

  • Educators can participate individually or in teams of 1-3 teachers.

  • This includes classroom teachers (public, private, or charter schools) and homeschool educators (with proof of homeschooling).

  • Educator teams can focus on teaching AI concepts, creating tools, or even using AI to improve classroom management.


📋 Registration Is Required

To officially join the Challenge, the team leader (whether it’s an educator, supervising adult, or mentor) must:

  1. Visit the Challenge website: AI Challenge Website.

  2. Complete the registration form and submit consent forms for all team members.

  3. Choose your project track and get started!
